What Is Low-E Glass?

Low-E stands for low-emissivity. Emissivity refers to a material’s ability to radiate heat. Standard glass has a high emissivity – meaning it readily allows heat to pass through in both directions. Low-E glass has a microscopically thin metallic coating applied to one or more surfaces of the glass that reflects heat rather than transmitting it.

The coating is invisible to the naked eye. From the outside, Low-E glass looks the same as standard glass. What’s different is what it does with the energy hitting its surface.

There are two main types:

Solar control Low-E is designed to block heat from the sun before it enters your home. It reflects a significant portion of solar infrared radiation while still allowing visible light through. This is the type most relevant to Baton Rouge, where cooling costs far outweigh heating costs.

Passive Low-E is designed to retain heat inside the home – more relevant in cold climates where keeping warmth in during winter is the priority. This type is less useful in Louisiana.

How Does It Reduce Heat Gain?

The sun’s energy comes in several forms: visible light, ultraviolet (UV) radiation, and near-infrared radiation (heat). Standard glass blocks very little of the infrared and UV. Low-E glass with a solar control coating reflects a large portion of those wavelengths before they pass through the glass.

The result is that your interior stays cooler even when the sun is beating directly on your windows. The glass still lets in plenty of visible light – your rooms don’t get dark or dim. What it reduces is the invisible heat energy that comes along with that light.

Most quality solar control Low-E glass products block 40-70% of solar heat gain compared to standard glass, depending on the specific product and the number of panes.

What About UV Protection?

Low-E coatings also block a significant portion of UV radiation – often 95% or more. This is a meaningful benefit beyond just energy efficiency.

UV rays are responsible for fading and degrading furniture, flooring, artwork, and fabrics over time. If you’ve noticed your wood floors discoloring near a sunny window, or your couch cushions fading on one side, that’s UV damage. Low-E glass dramatically slows that process without requiring you to keep your blinds closed all day.

The Real-World Energy Impact

How much can Low-E glass actually save on your energy bills? The answer depends on factors like your home’s size, existing insulation, HVAC efficiency, and how much window area you have. That said, the U.S. Department of Energy estimates that windows account for 25-30% of residential heating and cooling energy use. Upgrading to energy-efficient glass is one of the more impactful changes you can make to that number.

In a hot climate like Baton Rouge, replacing single-pane windows with double-pane Low-E glass can reduce cooling-related energy use through windows by 40% or more. Even upgrading from older double-pane windows without a Low-E coating to modern Low-E units can reduce solar heat gain noticeably.

Low-E Glass in Different Applications

This is the most common application. When old windows are replaced, upgrading to Low-E glass is standard practice for most reputable window companies today. The cost difference between standard IGU glass and Low-E glass at the unit level is relatively modest, making it an easy choice when you’re already investing in new windows.

Patio and Sliding Doors
Large glass doors are one of the biggest sources of solar heat gain in a home. Low-E glass in your sliding or hinged patio doors can make a significant difference in rooms that face east or west.

Skylights
Low-E coatings are especially important in skylights, which receive direct overhead sun and can funnel enormous amounts of heat into a space. If you have existing skylights with standard glass and notice that certain rooms get uncomfortably hot in summer, the glass may be a factor worth addressing.

Commercial Glazing
Office buildings, retail storefronts, and commercial facilities in Baton Rouge benefit significantly from Low-E commercial glazing. Large glass facades without solar control can make interior spaces nearly uninhabitable during peak summer without heavy HVAC load.

What to Look for When Comparing Products

Not all Low-E glass is created equal. Two metrics worth understanding when comparing options:

Solar Heat Gain Coefficient (SHGC): This number, between 0 and 1, measures how much solar heat passes through the glass. Lower is better for cooling climates. In Louisiana, look for products with an SHGC of 0.25 or lower for optimal summer performance.

U-Factor: This measures how well the glass prevents heat from escaping or entering via conduction. Lower is better overall, though in Louisiana the SHGC matters more than the U-factor for most homeowners.

Visible Light Transmittance (VLT): This is the percentage of visible light the glass allows through. High-quality solar control Low-E glass achieves low SHGC while maintaining a high VLT – meaning you get a cooler room without a darker room.
