Hurricane season runs June through November here in south Louisiana, and every year it’s a reminder to walk through your property – home or business – and make sure the glass features you rely on every day are ready for whatever the season brings.

Most storm-prep checklists focus entirely on windows. But there’s a lot more glass in and around a typical Baton Rouge home or business than just the windows, and a little attention now can save you a headache later.

Don’t Forget the Glass Inside Your Home

Shower enclosures, bathroom and closet mirrors, glass tabletops, and decorative glass shelving are all exposed to the same humidity swings, pressure changes, and power interruptions that come with a tropical system. Before a storm:

• Secure or remove any glass shelving, tabletops, or decorative glass pieces that could shift or fall if the house takes a hard impact.
• Check that shower enclosure hardware is tight and the silicone seal around the glass is intact – a compromised seal can let water intrude behind the enclosure during heavy, wind-driven rain.
• If you lose power for an extended period, humidity can spike quickly in south Louisiana heat. Keep an eye on mirror backing and framed glass for any signs of moisture intrusion afterward.

For Homes with Exterior Glass Concerns

If you have specific concerns about existing exterior glass – patio doors, glass railings, or older glazing you’re not confident in – it’s worth having it inspected before storm season rather than during an active watch. We’re happy to take a look and let you know what we see.

Business owners have their own pre-season checklist. Storefront glass and entry doors take the brunt of wind-driven debris, and a damaged storefront can mean lost business at exactly the wrong time. Before the season ramps up:

• Inspect storefront glass and entry door glazing for existing cracks or chips that could worsen under stress.
• Confirm security glass and door hardware are in good working order.
• If you don’t already have a plan for board-up or protective film in place, now is the time to line one up – not after a storm is already in the forecast.

After the Storm

Once a storm passes, walk your property and check for cracked or chipped glass, shifted shower enclosure panels, loose mirror hardware, and any storefront glass that took an impact. Some damage isn’t obvious until you look closely, especially around seals and hardware.
