What Blast-Resistant Glazing Actually Is
Blast-resistant glazing is engineered and tested to resist failure – or fail in a controlled, less hazardous way – under airblast loading from an explosion or overpressure event. It’s a fundamentally different specification than standard tempered or laminated glass, built for facilities where an uncontrolled explosive event is a real risk to plan for.
The ASTM F1642 Standard
ASTM F1642 is the primary industry test method for evaluating glazing and glazing systems subjected to airblast loading. Glazing is tested in a controlled blast chamber against a specific overpressure and impulse, and assigned a hazard rating under the related ASTM F2912 standard based on how it performs – whether it stays intact, breaks safely, or fails in a way that could injure occupants. When It’s Required vs. Recommended
ASTM F1642 testing isn’t mandated for most commercial buildings. It typically becomes a requirement for government, military, or high-risk infrastructure projects, where agencies like the GSA or DoD set specific blast-threat profiles that glazing must meet. For private industrial facilities – refineries, chemical plants, and manufacturing sites – blast-rated glazing is often adopted voluntarily as part of a facility’s own risk management standards, even without a regulatory mandate.
